It is soil that gives our food the nutrients and minerals that feed us. Healthy soil is filled with hundreds of millions of microorganisms per gram that help transform organic matter into food that plants can digest. Only with good soil, can agriculture survive. Unfortunately, healthy soil is being lost around the world at rates that jeopardize the future of our food systems.

Conventional Agriculture Kills Soil, Puts Humans At Risk

When chemicals are sprayed to kill bacteria, and soil is tilled regularly, the beneficial creatures living in the soil die off, leaving too few to break down nutrients for plants and fend off disease naturally. As a result, a vicious cycle is created where growers use ever more synthetic fertilizer and pesticides, causing more living soil to die out, dry out, erode, and release its carbon. The production and use of synthetic fertilizers also produce a lot of greenhouse gas. Beyond fertilizers, conventional animal agriculture releases significant amounts of methane from animal waste. Methane can be toxic for the human respiratory system and is 25x more potent than CO2.

How GEC Organics Brings Dead Soil Back to Life

GEC collects chicken manure that would otherwise be dumped, un-treated, near typically poor communities of color in the South East United States, and uses a proprietary blend of microbes to fix the nutrients to green agricultural waste and dead soil. The process avoids the release of methane from the manure and carbon from the green waste into the atmosphere by making them food for the microbes. Their 70-acre facility in Castleberry, Alabama is the largest of its kind in the US.

Better Soil, Better Crops

The finished product is a rich 100% organic compost that helps farmers save money by using less fertilizer and pesticides, while also reducing personal exposure to harmful chemicals. Using the compost increases water retention and decreases soil and fertilizer runoff by up to 50%. This is thanks to stronger root systems, resulting in improved quality and quantity of crop yields. The purchase of GEC’s carbon credits helps re-build the foundation of our agricultural systems. The more projects like GEC Organics grow, the closer we become to reversing soil loss for good, and securing future food supplies for a forecasted doubling of demand over the next 50-80 years.
